The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons Is Back on Broadway!

Jim Parsons has to be one of my favorite actors right now. He is beyond hilarious. Because of him I went to see him in The Normal Heart this past summer; which was amazing. He even stopped and took a picture with me! So when I found out he was going to be back on broadway needless to say I was thrilled. He will be in the revival show Harvey. Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark!

So ever since Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark started I had be curious about the show. Of course all the injuries and bad press didn't help the show start off with a bang. But after they took some time off to tweak some things, it started up again, and boy did it make a come back!

Now, I know the bare minimum when it comes to super heros. But I was still curious about seeing the show. My aunt had mentioned to me that she thought it was be the perfect show to take my 9yr old cousin for his first Broadway show. I agreed, and said that I wanted to see it also. So I went to the box office and purchased the tickets (there was actually a line there).

So this past Saturday my aunt, uncle, mom, cousin and I headed into the city for the day for some lunch and to see the show. Unfortunately, I hurt my ankle at work 2 weeks ago, and I'm on crutches which made it hard to get to the balcony where our seats where. Luckily, the theatre had elevator access, so I didn't have to climb as many stairs as I thought.

We had seats in the first row of the balcony..I sat in the aisle seat and my cousin sat right next to me; which turned out to be perfect seats (I'll explain why in a moment!)

So we were all getting excited when the lights dimmed and I was really curious to see how my cousin would enjoy his first Broadway musical. The show started, and in my opinion the beginning of the story went by kind of slow. However, it was necessary to explain the back story of how Peter Parker became Spider-Man. The plot basically is the same as the movie. It's about how Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man, the love story between him and Mary Jane, and his battle with the super villan the Green Goblin.

During the second act is where the real action started! The aerials in this show...WOW. It was amazing! They had about 10 different guys play Spider-Man, because of how many tricks there were. At one point right before the end of Act 1, the usher moved my crutches...and I was thinking, they're not in the way. Well, come to find out..they were! Spider-Man comes out of a door and runs down the aisle and jumped and sat right next to my cousin and I! He scared the bajeezus out of us! But it was awesome! He did it again a few more times, and my cousin even got a wave from Spidey! We were able to see most of the fighting scenes and tricks. I give these actors props, there is no way you could get me to fly around that theatre! Every single one of us enjoyed the show! I was worried to see if my cousin would enjoy it, since it was a musical. But all the aerial tricks, fight scenes, and the fact that Spidey sat next to us several times made him love it!

I would totally recommend this show! The story was good, the costumes and aerials were insane! This show is for kids and adults. It's so worth seeing! I would love to see it again, but from the different views. If you're in the city and are looking for a show to see, go see Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark!!

Interview With Jim Parsons

I fell in love with Jim Parsons from watching The Big Bang Theory. The show is hilarious, and Jim, in my opinion, makes the whole show. When I heard he was going to be on Broadway in The Normal Heart, I knew it was a play that I wanted and had to see. When I found out it was going to be closing July 10th, I immediately purchased tickets to see the play, and of course Jim. He did an interview with broadway.com about the play. Tragedy Strikes At How To Succeed

Last night was supposed to be How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying's 100th performance. Unfortunately this was not the case. The clock kept ticking away, while audience members waited in their seats for the show to begin. As time went on, they were informed with issues backstage and they would be updated soon. After about an hour, Daniel Radcliffe and other actor came on stage to give the audience news that the show would not go on. American Idiot...The Movie!

A lot of shows these days are turning into films. Chicago, Rent, Rock of Ages, etc. Whats the newest show that will become a movie? American Idiot of course! The show just recently ended their run on Broadway. Now I was always skeptical of this show since it opened. I have seen Green Day perform live before..and they were great. So when I heard they were making a show based on their music I was unsure about it. I mean, if I wanted to hear Green Day songs, why would I want to hear it from anyone other than Green Day? Near the end of their run, I actually wanted to go see it..but since Billie Joe Armstrong went back to the show, it was kind of hard to get tickets (not to mention I'm a broke college student!) So, I never ended up seeing the show.

However, now I will be able to get a chance to see it on the big screen! So at least I'll be able to see it, even if it is in my local movie theatre. Check out this link from broadway.com to read more about it: Billie Joel Armstrong Set To Star In American Idiot Movie; 2013 Released Planned

Idina Menzel = Amazing!

I'm a huge RentHead, and I love everyone and everything about it. I was too young to see the original cast in the show-but when I hit high school I saw it as many times as I could. I would listen to the soundtrack everyday. I just couldn't get enough of it. When I had found out that Idina Menzel was going to be in Wicked, I immediately bought tickets; without even fully knowing what the show was about. Her being in it was enough for me. Once the first note left her mouth, I got chills. Hearing her live was incredible. I fell in love with her even more so than before.

After Wicked I started keeping up with what Idina was involved in. I have been lucky enough to see Idina perform live in concert twice. The first time was at Count Baise Theare in Red Bank, and the second time was just last week when she performed at NJPAC. Both times she was AMAZING! For the NJPAC my cousin and I went and our seats were really crappy...but we didn't care. Her voice reached us without her having even to try. She performed songs from her famous shows Rent, Wicked, Glee and many more. She was hilarious as well. Not only can she belt out songs, she has such a rapport with the audience. She would tell stories in between songs, and everyone laughed their asses off! (If she ever gives up singing, she has a career as a comedian!) She made fun of her and Lea Michele singing Poker Face because she thought it was weird for a mother and daughter to sing (and she's right!)

After the show my cousin and I decided to wait at the stage door to try and meet her. We waited about 45 minutes, and out she came! She was super nice, sweet and gorgeous! She took the time to autograph everything! And the bonus of the night was she said she would also take pictures with us! My cousin and I almost died! We never thought we'd actually get a picture with her; an autograph was fine with us! It was the perfect end to an amazing night!! If you have the chance to see her live, DO IT!! Below are some pictures from the February show and the June show!

Tierney To Rejoin SPIDER-MAN Cast During Hiatus

Well it's no secret the Spidey hasn't had the best of luck this year. With many cast members getting injured, shows stopped half way because of technical problem, and people dangling in the hair over the crowd, it's got to be hard to get positive reviews. So if you haven't heard, Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark is taking some time off to regroup. They've closed up shop to try and fix the problems that have caused them so much negative press. The show will re-open June 14th (hopefully). And there is some good news: injured SPIDER-MAN perform Christopher Tierney will return to the musical. Tierney fell 30 feet and was seriously injured. He is now cleared by doctors to return to the show. Hopefully that will be the first and last time he has injuries from this show. .Christie Brinkley The New Roxie Hart

Watch out Velma, there's a new Roxie in town. Tonight was Christie Brinkley's first performance as Roxie Hart in Chicago. Now I've seen Chicago 3 times, and all 3 times were fantastic. I have yet to be disappointed in this show. I'm very curious to see how she lives up to the role. The role was orginated by none other than a broadway great: Bebe Neuwirth. The last time I saw Chicago the role of Roxie was played by Bianca Marroquin, who has by far been my favorite. I might just have to see it again to see how Brinkley puts her own twist to it! Was anyone able to see her debut tonight? How was she?! Let me know your thoughts!

Bye Bye Bebe

Bebe Neuwirth will be leaving The Addams Family June 28th. Her replacement? Brooke Shields. Now, having seen the play with the original cast, it's hard for me to imagine anyone else playing Morticia besides Bebe. She is Morticia. She has the look and the sound. Not to say that Brooke won't do the role justice, but in my opinion, she has some pretty big shoes to fill.

When You're An Addams

For awhile my dad had been saying that he wanted to see The Addams Family. At first I thought "yeah, I'm not seeing that." But with spring break coming up, I figured we could do a father daughter day in the city and see the show. So that's what we did.

I went into the city a few days earlier and bought the tickets at the box office of the theatre (Lunt-Fontanne Theatre) and got front row seats! However, after purchasing my tickets I heard the guy at the box office tell the people online that that Sunday would be Nathan Lane's last show. Of course I bought tickets for the next week. So I went back and asked if I could switch my tickets to see his last show. Thankfully the guy was super nice and gladly exchanged the tickets. We still got great seats: second row..not to shabby.

I was beyond excited that I was going to be so close to two huge broadway stars: Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. Who knows when I'd ever be able to see those two ever again! The play started with the classic Addams Family theme song and the audience went nuts. The story line is that Wednesday Addams falls in love with a "normal" boy and she wants to have his family over for dinner at their house. Of course, this concerned her entire family. One of the songs is called "One Normal Night", where she begs her family to try to be a little more "normal". The as the show goes on, things of course don't go as planned. I won't spoil the whole story, because it's really funny. You'll just have to go see it yourself!

The entire cast was absolutely amazing. The actor who played Lurch did a great job! Jackie Hoffman who played grandma was hilarious! Then there was the set. One word: Awesome. They had all sorts of moving sets, and parts of the set were animated. The combination of the acting and set put the show over the top.

We actually picked a perfect night to see the play. Not only was it Nathan's last show, but it was also the last performance for 6 of the original cast members. At the end the directors, producers and the cast gave speeches. I'm really glad that we switched our tickets to see their last performances. Even though the cast has changed, it is totally worth seeing

The Original Cast of The Addam Family

Left to Right:  Adam Riegler (Pugsley), Krysta Rodriguez (Wednesday), Zachary James (Lurch), Kevin Chamberlin (Uncle Fester), Bebe Neuwirth (Morticia), Nathan Lane (Gomez), Jackie Hoffman (Grandma)

Sister Act? Amen!

Last weekend I did something I've never done before: rush for tickets. Ever since I heard Sister Act was coming to Broadway I knew I had to see it. Both movies are some of my all time favorites. Previews for the show started March 24th and it officially opens on April 20th.

For this blog I have also created a twitter account (@AllThingsBway) and one of the first people I followed was @SisterActBway. One thing I really like about following them on twitter is that they actually talk to their audience! They interact with everyone and it makes it that much more fun to follow them. They @ mention their fans and retweet things. Also, by following them, I heard about their rush tickets. If you show up at the theatre (Broadway Theatre) at 10am the day of the show, you can get front row orchestra seats for $26.50! Yes, $26.50! I had to do a double take myself when I first read it. So far they say there is no end date for the rush tickets. They also raffle off free tickets (I believe on Friday's) via twitter. All you do is follow them on twitter, then @ mention them with a good deed you've done that week ending the tweet with #gooddeed. You'll then be in the running to win free tickets!

So I told my friend about it and she agreed that we should rush. So I woke up at 6am (Yuck! I haven't seen 6am since high school!), and I got on the train to head into the city to get these awesome tickets. I got to the theatre at about 9:30am and there were about 12 people ahead of me in line. I was shocked. It was a Friday morning, and crappy outside, and I didn't think there would be that many people in line. So the doors open up at 10am on the dot. I go inside with my fellow theatre goers and with 3 people ahead of me I was told that the rush tickets were sold out. SOLD OUT?! I couldn't believe it! Normally they have about 20 something tickets, and they only had 15! I was pissed needless to say, but my friend and I had planned on seeing the show anyway. So I bought 2 orchestra seats for the 8pm show.

Can I just say that this show is Faboulous Baby! The main plot is practically the same as the movie. Deloris (Whoopie's character in the movie) was played by Patina Miller. Boy can she saaanngg! The story continues about how she witnesses a murder and has to stay in a rectory with the nuns. At first when I read the playbill I was disappointed that none of the songs from the movie were in the show. But as the show went on, I didn't even care. I found myself tapping my foot along to every song. The entire cast was amazing. There was not one single weak link. Marla Mindelle, the actress who plays Sister Roberts, (the very shy nun) couldn't have played the part any better!

There are a few suprises in the show, which I won't spoil...you'll just have to see it for yourselves! I totally recommend seeing this play!

Should Spidey Hang Up His Tights?

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past year, you've probably heard about Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. Unfortunately, what you've heard probably has not been in a positive light. This production has pushed back opening night for months now. With countless amounts of injuries to the cast, this show is not getting the best word of mouth buzz. There have been rumors that the show is going to be sued (whether this is true or not, I have no idea.) Although, some people are simply buying tickets just to see someone get stuck up in the air. Well there has been another glitch to the show: the director has left the show. Click the link below to read an article about the loss of the shows director.

Everyone's A Little Bit Racist..

So you're going into the city to hang out for the day and you want to go see a play but not sure what to see. You've heard about this show called Avenue Q about people on stage with puppets. You're probably thinking to yourself "Why on earth would I want to see a show with puppets? I don't want to see a kids show." Well you'd be wrong! WARNING: Avenue Q NOT FOR KIDS!

Avenue Q is playing off-broadway at the New World Stages theatre located on 304 West 50th between 8th and 9th ave. This is just one of the shows playing at New World Stages. They actually have 5 different small theatres within the building showing different plays in each theatre. The theatre is smaller and more intimate than the theatres on broadway. You won't find a bad seat in the house. Tickets are about $90(It's cheaper if you buy them right of the box office.)

Finally the lights dim and the show begins with the theme song, "We Live on Avenue Q." The actors come on stage with puppets in hand, and for a split second you think you're watching Sesame Street. But then they open their mouths and you realize you are far from Sesame Street. Avenue Q is about a recent college grad named Princeton. He's finally out living on his own and excited about starting his life. Unfortunately, he can only afford an apartment on Avenue Q, which isn't the best neighborhood. He finds an apartment, and his landlord is (drumroll please): Gary Coleman (enough said). He starts making friends with his neighbors: Brian & his wife Christmas Eve(who play regular people with no puppets), Kate Monster, Rod, Nicky, & Trekkie Monster.

The play is about their trials and tribulations of life. The first number they sing is "It Sucks To Be Me." That song sets the bar for the rest of the show. With other songs like, "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist", "Give Us Your Money", "The Internet is for Porn", and "I'm Now Wearing Any Underwear Today" it will be hard not to be doubled over with laughter. And as the play goes on, they focus on the relationships of the group. Now, I don't want to give away all the stories, because I won't be able to do it justice. Just take my advice and spend the $90 to see the show, it's worth it.

Here are some good quotes from the show:

Nicky: "What's schadenfreude?"
Gary Coleman: "It's German for happiness at the is fortune of others."
Nicky: "Happiness at the misfortune of others?.. that is German."

Christmas Eve: "The jews have all the money and the whites have all the power, and i'm always in taxi cab with driver who no shower."

Princeton & Kate: "Everyone makes judgements based on race."
Princeton: "Not big judgements like who to hire or who to buy a newspaper from. Just little judgements like thinking the Mexican bus boy should learn to speak God damn English!"
Princeton & Kate: "Everyone's a little bit racist today."

Bitten By The Love Bug: The Broadway Love Bug

I was about 10 or 11 years old when I saw my first Broadway show. My mom and aunt took my brother, cousins and I into the city for the day. Us kids thought we were so cool; it was our first train ride ever. Riding the train we thought we were all that and a bag of chips. We finally reached our destination: New York Penn Station. We got off the train and started trying to navigate through the crowded, smelly train station. (Riding the train didn't seem so glamorous anymore) We finally made our way out of the train station and were standing on 34th and 8th. It was a gorgeous Spring day; perfect weather for walking around the city.

We didn't have any specific plans for the day. My mom and aunt were just going to wing it and try to have a great day. They finally decided that since we were in the city, we should go see a play. Needless to say, my brother, cousin's and I weren't too thrilled about this decision. What kid wants to spend a beautiful day inside? And in a play no less! They decided that we were going to see The Sound of Music. Cue the dreadful music. All at once you heard moaning, whining and complaining. Of all the plays to see, that was probably the last play we'd ever think of going to see. So they dragged us to the TKTS booth in Times Square. It was the quickest and cheapest way to get tickets for the same day of the show. God must have been on our side that day, because when we got there there were no more tickets! Thank the Lord! Needless to say, we were super excited we didn't have to go see that play. But they still thought we should see something, so the next best thing was Cats.

Cats was playing at the Winter Garden Theatre. (Located between 50th and 51st street; now currently showing Mama Mia!) Cats had been on Broadway for years and my mom and aunt figured it would be more entertaining for us. So they bought 6 tickets and off we went. We got into the theatre, found our seats, and waited for the lights to dim. By this point, I personally was getting really excited to see what this was all about. I mean, I knew it was a show about people dressed up as cats and singing, but that was the extent of it. All of a sudden the lights went down and cats started popping out behind people! They were hidden in the audience and were interacting with everyone. I thought that was the coolest thing. So for the next few hours I sat in the theatre in amazement. When it was finished the lights came up and everyone on stage came and took a bow. From that moment on, I was hooked. All it takes is just one show to get you hooked. Sometimes I wonder if we had gone to see Sound of Music if I would have felt the same way. Regardless, from that day forward I became a lover of Broadway.
