Avenue Q is playing off-broadway at the New World Stages theatre located on 304 West 50th between 8th and 9th ave. This is just one of the shows playing at New World Stages. They actually have 5 different small theatres within the building showing different plays in each theatre. The theatre is smaller and more intimate than the theatres on broadway. You won't find a bad seat in the house. Tickets are about $90(It's cheaper if you buy them right of the box office.)
Finally the lights dim and the show begins with the theme song, "We Live on Avenue Q." The actors come on stage with puppets in hand, and for a split second you think you're watching Sesame Street. But then they open their mouths and you realize you are far from Sesame Street. Avenue Q is about a recent college grad named Princeton. He's finally out living on his own and excited about starting his life. Unfortunately, he can only afford an apartment on Avenue Q, which isn't the best neighborhood. He finds an apartment, and his landlord is (drumroll please): Gary Coleman (enough said). He starts making friends with his neighbors: Brian & his wife Christmas Eve(who play regular people with no puppets), Kate Monster, Rod, Nicky, & Trekkie Monster.
The play is about their trials and tribulations of life. The first number they sing is "It Sucks To Be Me." That song sets the bar for the rest of the show. With other songs like, "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist", "Give Us Your Money", "The Internet is for Porn", and "I'm Now Wearing Any Underwear Today" it will be hard not to be doubled over with laughter. And as the play goes on, they focus on the relationships of the group. Now, I don't want to give away all the stories, because I won't be able to do it justice. Just take my advice and spend the $90 to see the show, it's worth it.
Here are some good quotes from the show:
Nicky: "What's schadenfreude?"
Gary Coleman: "It's German for happiness at the is fortune of others."
Nicky: "Happiness at the misfortune of others?.. that is German."
Christmas Eve: "The jews have all the money and the whites have all the power, and i'm always in taxi cab with driver who no shower."
Princeton & Kate: "Everyone makes judgements based on race."
Princeton: "Not big judgements like who to hire or who to buy a newspaper from. Just little judgements like thinking the Mexican bus boy should learn to speak God damn English!"
Princeton & Kate: "Everyone's a little bit racist today."
